History In 1994, Portland Youth Golf Association (PYGA) was founded by Robert M. Clark, Sr., PGA PYGA was founded upon the fundamental principles of education, sportsmanship, integrity and respect. The First Tee of Portland, a program of the Portland Youth Golf Association began stressing education and the learning process as fundamental underlying qualities of good sportsmanship and life skills.
The First Tee of Portland, a program of the PYGA program started by teaching four basic elements – Life Skills, Character Development, Academic Success and Golf Fundamentals in that order. Life skills included how to introduce yourself to someone and be able to communicate effectively with people of all ages. Character Development was emphasized with The First Tee of Portland, a program of the PYGA motto: “Doing the right thing when no one is looking”. Academic success is stressed by having participants submit copies of grade reports with a minimum 2.0 required for program participation. An incentive program for students achieving above the minimum included private instruction with PGA Professionals, travel opportunities and special equipment.
